The Gothic novel, Frankenstein, was anonymously published in Britain in 1818. It was not until it was published in France in 1823 that readers knew its author was gifted writer, Mary Shelly. The novel was the result of a competition Shelly and others started about who could write the best horror story. For weeks she pondered the idea until she had a dream about a scientist who became horrified at his creation: Frankenstein.
