  • The Evolution of Hiccups Costume in How to Train Your Dragon

    top img

     By Esteban Cepero

Over the past couple of years, How to Train Your Dragon has been a box office hit introducing us to the story of  Hiccup a young aspiring dragon slayer and Toothless a young harmless dragon. Both characters go through crazy adventures, take on many foes and expose their audience to evolution of costumes. Seeing the two grow up and develop together in the past two films beautifully displays the special relationship that they share.  One special and iconic similarity that Hiccup and Toothless share are that they're both partially crippled. This brought a major change in Hiccup's costume that was amazingly shown in the second film with how he utilized his forging skills to navigate himself on Toothless.

From the first two films, over the course of five years, Hiccup continues to mature and this is clearly shown through Hiccup's costume. From the first to third film, let's see how much Hiccup's costume has developed!

How to Train Your Dragon-Hiccup at 15

In the first film, Hiccups world was completely different with his father and most of his people having a pure hatred for dragons. Hiccup, who is clearly small in stature, was meant to be trained to kill dragons. One of Hiccup's biggest goals was to prove himself to his father and he thought he had a major opportunity to by slaying a 'night fury', Toothless. This obviously didn't happen as he befriended Toothless, fixed his wing using his blacksmith tools, and soared the sky with his friends to rescue his father from the Red Dragon. Hiccup's costume in the first film was just his simple youth clothing inspired by the Viking culture that he grew up in. Hiccup's costume remained the same throughout the film and didn't see any major changes until the second one.

How To Train Your Dragon 2-Hiccup at 20

How to Train Your Dragon 2 takes place five years into the future where we see an adult Hiccup as it displays how his skills as a Blacksmith greatly improved, along with his creativity. In this film, we see Hiccup's costume develop into full-on battle armor as he establishes himself as the leader dragon rider of the Village of Berk. At the end of the previous film, Hiccup loses his foot which was crucial to his relationship with Toothless. With Gobber's amazing blacksmith abilities, he was able to create a custom steel peg for Hiccup, along with a custom saddle so that he's able to attach to Toothless in order to fly and guide him in the sky. The world of dragons and Vikings are combined after the events of the first film and delivers some amazing graphics as we explore more of the world of dragons.

How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World-Hiccup at 21

After the release of the first trailer for the highly-anticipated How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, Hiccup's costume doesn't have many changes as it only takes place one year in the future. Though, it seems that throughout the film, we'll see Hiccup change greatly towards the end. This is speculated through Hiccup's costume change in the trailer with the grown out beard and Hiccup's costume design with the furry cape.  Most trailers show a babyface Hiccup so this will be a considerable transformation that will be exciting to see take place on-screen.

There's much to see with the release of How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World as Dreamworks fans worldwide are more than excited for February 2nd! Hiccup has grown up greatly since the very first How To Train Your Dragon with all the experiences he pushed through alongside his dragon companion. Hiccup's costume is influenced through his skills in being a blacksmith as he develops a special armor for himself to fly on Toothless and even created a sword that can set itself on fire! The How To Train Your Dragon franchise has provided us with a unique story that hasn't finished yet. So go check out How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World once it's released to theaters!
