  • Why It’s Good for Spider-Man’s New Costume to Be Less CGI

    By Esteban Cepero

Spider-Man, Spider-Man, does whatever a spider can! As a Marvel and Spider-Man fanboy, it’s difficult to wait almost a year for the release of the highly anticipated film Spider-Man: Homecoming. After Tom Holland’s amazing performance as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the recently released film Captain America: Civil War, the hype is through the roof! During this summer, San Diego comic-con took place not too long ago and at Hall H, a whole variety of information and new footage was released regarding upcoming films and shows. While many believe DC stole the show with the Justice League, and Wonder Woman trailers, Marvel had a little special surprise only for fans who made it to Hall H. That’s right, it turns out only about two weeks from filming Spider-Man: Homecoming, Marvel was able to gather up enough footage to produce an actual teaser trailer. Sadly, the trailer won’t be released to the public until some time in October. If you’re a big fan like me, it’s a huge bummer to have to wait but if you think about it, we’re going to be getting a better trailer with more footage than the one shown at Hall H. So a lot of high hopes for that!

The film is still in early production and so far with all of the set photos coming out, everything looks astonishing! Especially Spider-Man’s costume. Of course with a new Spider-Man, there has to be a new costume; and honestly Marvel did a fantastic job. You can clearly see that Marvel took a look back into Steve Ditko’s original artwork of Spider-Man when he first appeared in the 60’s. The resemblance is amazingly uncanny.

If you remember from the Captain America: Civil War film, Spider-Man’s new costume had a couple of CGI effects to it. While it wasn’t really all too much, it was still very noticeable. It appears from the set photos, Marvel might be changing it up this time. Tom Holland is actually rocking a fabricated full body Spider-Man costume to look exactly as the costume did when he made his first appearance. From looking at behind-the-scenes videos for Civil War, Tom Holland had a specially designed costume completely meant for CGI effects. Without so much CGI, this makes things a lot more easier for the production of the film, considering the fact that CGI takes a bit of more work and time. For producing a film such as this, an actual Spider-Man costume makes a lot more sense. There’s no saying that the costume won’t have a bit CGI touches to it, it probably most likely will, especially in the eyes of the costume. When we first saw Spider-Man suited up and in action, the eyes had special lenses built into them with a zoom effect to help Spider-Man see better. There’ll definitely be some CGI, just not as dramatic as before.

With there also being an actual fabricated Spider-Man costume, we’re definitely going to see a lot more interaction with the technology behind the suit. How awesome would it be to see how his web shooters work, especially after the upgrade Tony Stark gave to them? Even the mask also, one can only ponder what kind of special tech Stark designed so that the lenses in Spider-Man’s mask automatically zoom.

Spider-Man is on the clock almost every hour of the day; when there’s danger he will not back down. If you look at the set photo above, Parker is fully suited in his Spider-Man costume while wearing his book bag for school. This scene obviously might be taking place before of after school starts. In that case, Parker needs some easy access to his Spider-Man costume. So he might pull off a move like Tobey Maguire did in the classic Spider-Man films and wear it under his clothes. Well, with Peter Parker still being in high school, it could be dangerous in giving away his secret identity.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is still young in production so there’s a whole lot more to see in the near future! Spider-Man: Homecoming swings into theaters on July 7, 2017.
