Game Of Thrones Costumes Tell Us Everything About The Characters!
The long anxious wait is over! As we begin the last season of Game Of Thrones, the phenomenally popular fantasy-action-drama television series adapted from "A Song of Ice and Fire" novels by George R. R. Martin, we can see how the beloved characters, who have survived unimaginable atrocities (including death) have grown in depth and dimension, and their attire is as telling as their vengeance driven actions. Here's a recap of how from the first to the last season, Game of Thrones costumes tell us everything about the characters! In particular, about Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) and how you can shop your favorite GOT costume at WonderCostumes.com, the best online costume store on the web for accurate period costumes at budget friendly prices.
We first see Daenerys Targaryen, as she stares out into the landscape of Pentos, the land where she and her older brother Viserys have been exiled after their father, The Mad King and ruler of the Seven Kingdoms, was murdered, and the kingdoms divided. It's daytime, and Daenerys is wearing a wispy fabric halter gown of rose-taupe, with a deep, low back down to the curb of her back. Daenerys outfit is unequivocally sensual, as is Daenerys, with her long blonde, white hair - which is actually a wig, and a popular item in the GOT costume selections of WonderCostumes.com, flowing naturally loose. The powerlessness of her situation is mirrored in her flimsy dress. In this scene we learn her older brother Viserys has offered Daenerys, to Khal Drogo, referred to as "The Great Khal" (possibly because he's a tall, beast of a man), a chieftain horse-warlord of the fictional nomadic Dothraki, in exchange for his help in providing an army with which Viserys can return to Westeros to reclaim his father's throne. Daenerys Targeryen's costumes in the first scenes are garments we would expect to see worn by a beautiful, exiled princess. Her frail predicament is depicted with the wispy sheer dress that reveals her nakedness.
Princess Daenerys' second costume, the one she wears when presented for the first time to the rough, barbaric Khal Drogo, only slightly veils her body, portraying her as a delicate, exposed and vulnerable pawn in her brother's scheme. The only thing that suggests a stronger, hidden personality are the Dragon crest pins of her family house, adorning the dress at her shoulders. The garment speaks of a trophy bride from a powerful family. When Daenerys marries Drogo, she becomes the Dothraki "Khaleesi" and we see the Khaleesi's costume is more queenly, in a Grecian draped style, and more defined than her earlier clothing. The color of Dhaenery's wedding gown is a soft combination of light and darker shades of taupe-beige, and the fabric is opaque, hinting at her transition into a more solid character, with fading vulnerability. This style of costume is similar to medieval princess' costumes, as in this selection from WonderCostumes.com .
Suddenly, Daenerys' costume changes. With her new Khaleesi title, and her growing intimacy with Khal Drogo, she dresses in the traditional attire of the Dothrakis, as her princess gowns are not practical for her new, nomadic lifestyle. Leather, and natural coarse fabrics in utilitarian fashion, shape her clothes as she fully assimilates her husband's culture, and indicative of how she begins to acquire a thicker skin and handle authority. WonderCostumes.com has a selection of women warrior costumes in the GOT Khaleesi style worn by Daenerys during her life with the Dothrakis.
Daenerys suffers the tragedy of Drogo's death, and that of their unborn child. In the process she discovers her fireproof skin and the birth of 3 dragons as she struggles to survive in a desert wasteland. Almost near death, she is rescued by the leader of Qarth, an ancient port city, and brought into the city walls for safety. As a guest of the city's leader, and appropriate of her stature, Daenery's threads become ornate and regal, in stronger fabrics, adorned with gold and metal accents. Her costumes transition into leather, armored-inspired pieces with angled cuts, queenly, but darker and tougher, leaving behind for good every trace of the frail and gauzy gowns in which she first appeared. This change in costume style is symbolic of Daenery's growing strength, both in character, and in power. For GOT inspired costumes from this period in Daenery's journey, WonderCostumes.com has a selection of warrior queen outfits that would command dragons!
Going into Season 3 and 4 and Daenerys conquers Slaver's Bay and frees the slaves there. The Khaleesi's costumes become more structured and begin to resemble military outfits as she takes control of the Unsullied army. Her new people see her as a deliverer, a bringer of justice and peace and the dramatic hooded blue cape gives her an almost saintly appearance. Daenerys' costume changes in this period as she dons more elegant, sophisticated outfits now that she's often conducting official business with other powerful people. As the tribulations of her rule across the Narrow Sea, Daenerys' costumes become more stately and serious, in tones of grey, matte blue heavier embroideries, and brown leathers adorned in metal. The saintly-like hues of blue become darker, as her story becomes more serious.
In Season 5 Daenerys' costumes are completely regal as she wears her silver dragon necklaces and white, embroidered, thicker fabric, queenly gowns, her hair in more intricate designs, we see this to represent her rise to a powerful, wiser woman, and leader, leaving behind the fierceness of her days with the Dothrakis. Daenerys is now a queen leader, but this changed in Season 6 when she escaped the fighting scene of Meereen on the back of Drogon, dirtying her white costume in the escape and finding herself again, with the Dothrakis. She is captured by a hostile, Dothraki khalasar who is intent on humiliating and shaming her. Daenerys' garments during this new and unexpected drawback is of grayish tones, and not quite like the Dothraki clothing she wore as Khaleesi. Her costumes during this period appear to blend with her surrounding, symbolic of her determination to survive her captivity, which she does, amid a raging inferno. In Season 7 Daenerys is back with a stronger, the more defined Dragon Queen look, and her costumes cover more of her, like armor. We see darker grey and burgundy tones, shoulder pads that extend out over the shoulders, still reminiscent of militaristic dress, with the shoulder pads suggesting a higher rank. Over her costume she wears a thick chain across her chest, with a red sash hanging from it. The chain takes the place of a royal crown as Daenerys' costumes become more majestic, and always with the dragon chain, there is no question of her commanding status - the lofty look of the warrior queen. We also see the addition of fur to her ensembles, particularly with the striped fur coat which symbolically represents her growing affection for Jon Snow.
As we come into the final Season of GOT, we know Daenerys' costumes will be a continuation of the military, somber colors but with more fur and drapery because "winter is coming." The trailer shows her in a black dress with red strips in the upper bodice, her gloves are of a dark purplish leather, and she wears dark boots all in dark gray military style and angled cuts that implying the long dark winter that looms ahead. Will Daenerys finally be the ruler she has always dreamed of being? The GOT trailer for Season 8 shows the Khaleesi's garments to be battle-ready against the White Walkers Army.
