Baseball evokes more nostalgia among Americans than any sport. Dating back to the 1800?s Baseball was first played in sandlots and was called “Rounders”. In 1871 the first professional baseball league was born. Baseball came of age in the 1920s, when Babe Ruth led the New York Yankees to several World Series titles and became a national hero. Legendary players such as Ty Cobb and Lou Gehrig would elevate the game and became household names. The first African-American to play baseball was Jackie Robinson and when he first donned a Brooklyn Dodger uniform in 1947, he lead the way to the integration of professional athletics in America. By breaking the color barrier in baseball, he bravely challenged the deeply rooted custom of racial segregation in both the North and the South. He also opened the door for fellow African American Willie Mays, ranked #2 as the greatest player ever. Today baseball is still a crowd-pleased sport and every summer faithful baseball fans turn out to support their hometown teams.
