Dead’s Gon’ Give it to Ya

Why wearing a Deadpool costume is the safest radical bet on Halloween.

    By Shrey Sankalp

Look, it’s no big stretch of imagination to say we all love doing something radical once in a while. Sometimes it pays off, sometimes it doesn’t. When it doesn’t pay off, the results are usually embarrassing, but never not funny. This is something I find especially true of when it comes to costumes. Picking out a desired costume is probably the worst headache about Halloween – whoever said a wide variety of anything was never a bad thing, clearly never shopped for a costume on Halloween. There’s always a plethora of superhero costumes and ‘mainstream’ costumes, and while it’s easy to pick one of those costumes, there’s usually a part of you that wishes you’d gone for that other over-the-top costume that popped up in your suggestions when you see about thirty-seven other people wearing the same costume as you. But like I said, radical costumes aren’t without their drawbacks – you never know if someone’s not going to take a bite out of you if you dressed in a sandwich costume or something. And we’ve all seen how robot costumes fail when its owner doesn’t know what he’s doing. But what if I told you there’s a costume that’s radical enough, but still a safe bet? You probably wouldn’t believe such a thing exists, which is why let me introduce to you, the Deadpool costume!

    Sister-Margarets-Deadpool

    Fox/Marvel

Before I get into why the costume is just what you need, let me segue for a second to talk about the film (much like the film segued to give us Mr. Pool’s origin story, because artistic parallels and whatnot). Of all the 5 trillion superhero movies that opened in 2016, Deadpool was unquestionably the best. In a year that should have knocked superhero fatigue out of the park, we got:

    A. Deadpool, which was awesome, had an unconventional approach, made use of is hard R rating, gave a completely comic accurate fourth-wall demolishing portrayal of the character, the most comic accurate costume in the history of most comic accurate costumes and none of that shared universe continuity baggage. (they kinda had to do 75% of those things out of fan pressure thanks to a disastrous last iteration of the character, but okay)

    B. A superhero vs. superhero movie that was laughably convoluted and forcibly dark to a point where it seemed like self-parody.

    C. A superhero vs. superhero movie that was so uncharacteristically self-serious and morose to a point it seemed like a good episode of a great HBO drama.

    D. A superhero movie that is so generic and predictable even vanilla ice-cream hated it.

    E. A superhero movie that was so dumb and nonsensical it had to be recut like a trailer and reshot to add humor.

    F. A superhero movie with another clichéd origin hidden behind jaw-dropping visuals.

Go through that list again and tell me how Deadpool was no going to end up as the best superhero film of the year.

One of the best things about Deadpool was the costume. The costume may have looked cool (and hidden any instances of Deadpool bleeding), but it was also 100% comic accurate (a shocking rarety) and that alone would have made the costume my best costume pick across most category, but as promised, let me illustrate why it is the safest radical bet for the year. Now we all know how Deadpool is a character with an ultra-heightened sense of everything. This very ultra-heightened sense causes him to say and do things that are extremely shocking, and some to a degree that makes them unmentionable here. The way I see it, when you put on the Deadpool costume, you get a free pass. You can literally say or do anything (because let’s be honest, who doesn’t get a little carried away on Halloween, am I right?), no matter how Instagram-worthily embarrassing, you can always, and I mean always get away with saying you were trying to do the Deadpool costume justice by behaving like the character. And I’m about 100% sure your friends will believe you because Deadpool will probably have done it already. (although I would suggest looking up what you’re about to do to make sure it’s legal, and to readily quote the instance to your friends) And I’m pretty sure Deadpool costume owners will never feel samey about wearing the same costume as 5 trillion others because like I said, everyone can do their own thing wearing the same costume and yet be true to the character. If that’s not as safe as a radical bet gets, then I don’t know what is, so get off your computer, put on your Deadpool costume, and work that strut blasting X Gon’ Give it to Ya!
