According to Merriam Webster's Dictionary, a "Mascot" is a person, animal or object adopted by a group as a symbolic figure especially to bring them good luck.

When you think of a college's name one of the first things that come to mind is their mascot. The very first mascots made their appearance at Ivy League schools. These colleges looked for a way to set apart their school from others and develop an air of individuality and uniqueness. In essence, the mascot symbolizes the school's spirit and should embody their identity. Every school (junior high, high school and college) and sports team adopts a figure to represent them. It becomes a tradition and a symbol that stays with students well after graduation.

School and sports mascots have a very important job to do. They generate excitement and hype up the fans before games and between plays. They serve to energize and motivate the masses, giving them a sense of belonging and camaraderie.

In a study done by Fox Sports, the top five college recognizable mascots (in order from number 1 -5 are): Buffaloes - University of Colorado (Ralphie), The Longhorns - University of Texas (Bevo), Bulldogs - University of Georgia, Eagles - Auburn (Thunder) and Sooners - University of Oklahoma.
