Puppetry is an ancient art form of communicating ideas and needs of societies. Said to have originated in India more than 4000 years ago, where the main character in Sanskrit plays was known as "Sutradhara", "the holder of strings", it is still a well-known form of art which entertains both children and adults.

There are several notable puppets through-out pop culture including Howdy Doody, Lamb Chop, H.R. Pufnstuf, The Muppets, the gang from Sesame Street, Alf, Yoda, even Triumph the Insult Dog. We know of these puppets because of their skilled puppeteers, who effortlessly make them come to life right before our eyes. One very talented American puppeteer is Jim Henson. Henson was born on September 25, 1936. At a young age he was enchanted with the arts. His grandmother, a painter encouraged him to cultivate his creative passion for puppets and he did. Before his teens he was performing for audiences and during high school he landed his first puppeteer job, on a local Saturday morning show. By his first year in college he created his own puppet show called Sam and Friends. This would introduce us to the earliest version of Kermit.

Soon after, Jim was approached to assist in producing an educational TV show for kids called Sesame Street. This classic children's show would bring us some of the most beloved characters. After Sesame Street success, Jim forged on to create the Emmy Award winning hit show The Muppets. Jim Henson created over 2,000 Muppets during his lifetime.
