- In French, Renaissance means “rebirth”, it is an era that took medieval societies out of the “Dark Ages” and into a progressive economically blooming society throughout Europe (peaking between ca. 15th -17th centuries). It meant revival of intellectual culture, new scientific discoveries, religious challenges and changes, and a return to classical antiquity (hence “renaissance”). No costume event is complete without an impersonation from a historical renaissance personage, whereas a queen or a fairy tale character!
